The publishing house established by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo emerged as the main producer of printed popular literature between 1880 and 1917, but already since the beginning of the 19th century there were various presses publishing diverse literature: the successor of the Viuda de Miguel de Ortega y Bonilla press, the press of Pedro de la Rosa in Puebla; Juan Matute (1836) and Juan Quijano’s (1844) presses in Toluca; the most outstanding presses in Mexico City, such as the Casa de Alejandro Valdés (1818-1819) and Antonio H. Guevara’s press (González, 2001: 453).
The Texts of the Present Catalogue
The study of the complete repository of a publishing house like Vanegas Arroyo’s allows to fully understand the characteristics and functions of the series that were produced, as in the cases of press houses like that of Hernando y Laborda.[1] In spite of the constant criticism to which cordel literature and its content were submitted, as pointed out by María Cruz García de Enterría,[2] the function that is most obviously being pursued is the moralisation of the readers, as indicated by the religious texts guiding the audience and readers to the christian and good ways of life and death. Beside, the wide distribution, the dissemination, and the consumption of their content due to the new mass-production systems reveal the influence exerted by the presses in the survival and creation of literary genres such as the corridos or the décimas. [3]
On the other hand, the printed music that was being distributed seemed to be more of the fashionable type, often related to plays such as the zarzuelas and sainetes, wherein the “verses were circulated through music” and so this “was not only a kind of ‘second publication’ of the text, but also an incorporation to an ongoing creativity based on the ‘open structure’”. [4]

The Print Catalogue
The variety of genres contained in the archive bequeathed by the Vanegas House (songbooks, tales, events, love letters, congratulations, forecasts, novenarios)were printed in different formats: chapbooks, broadsheets, booklets and books Most of this material were low-cost prints on crude paper that reached many sectors of the population, its price remaining below one cent.
